The provision of first class sporting facilities is at the heart of our plans. Surrey Canal will address the lack of high quality sports facilities within the borough and across the whole of London.
Renewal will deliver a major new regional centre for sporting excellence featuring transparent, state-of-the-art buildings capable of serving the needs of the local community, local colleges and school and elite training. These will mostly be located at ground level, facing Surrey Canal Road.
Renewal has been working with Sport England to identify the right mix of sporting uses and this has led to discussions with many sporting national bodies who have lent their support to our proposals. We are proposing facilities for basketball, netball, gymnastics, climbing, hockey, football, table tennis, boxing, cricket and a leisure centre with a swimming pool and day spa. The facilities will be safeguarded by the Surrey Canal Sporting Foundation, a registered charity, set up to ensure the long term future of the Sports at Surrey Canal.
Surrey Canal already has an established sporting identity and Renewal plan to build on this by making Millwall FC an integral part of the Surrey Canal scheme.
Specifically, the football club will benefit from:
- A more welcoming environment around the stadium
- Provision to expand the stadium
- The creation of Stadium Avenue – a spacious pedestrian-friendly boulevard flanked by shops, cafés and restaurants
- Pleasant new public squares and meeting areas for fans to enjoy on match days
- Opportunities to enjoy a “day out” at Surrey Canal taking part in a range of sporting and leisure pursuits
- Improved safety and security on match days
- Better access to the site with existing routes enhanced and new walking and cycling networks
- Modern facilities for the Lions Community Centre
We recognise that there is huge demand for basketball and general sports facilities in London which are currently not provided. We are excited about the prospect of new state of the art facilities being planned at Surrey Canal and we support their development wholeheartedly.
