About Surrey Canal
The Surrey Canal site covers 30 acres and has two major landowners — Renewal Group and the London Borough of Lewisham.
History

The Surrey Canal area was once a settlement on the periphery of London.
It now forms part of Central London’s urban landscape. It had a history of residential development before it became a public park in 1972 and then the home
of the New Den in 1993.

The Surrey Canal was once used to transport timber from Greenland Dock to Camberwell. The Canal was closed in 1971 and filled in. Renewal hopes to pay tribute to this historical landmark by introducing a water or artistic feature which would run along Surrey Canal Road, the original route of the canal.

This area has an established sporting pedigree, and the location and planned transport links mean that a huge numbers of people will be able to use it and make the site sustainable for years to come.
